A facial is a beauty treatment for your face. There are many spa brands and styles of facial available, and each spa and each brand describes them in a slightly different way. Facials use a variety of products, massage techniques and equipment to give you cleaner, healthier, more radiant-looking skin. If you haven’t had a facial before, or just haven’t found one that you like yet, read our handy guide to find out about the best facial for you.

What is a facial good for?

This depends largely on the ski type you have. The titles and descriptions of facials give you a vague idea of their general intention. The aims of most facials are the same:

  • to clean and smooth: sloughing away dead skin cells with an exfoliator, and deep-cleaning pores with a cleanser, helps prevent acne and dull skin, and leaves skin feeling smoother and softer
  • to balance and moisturise: hydrating skin with the right facial oil, serum and/or moisturiser for your skin type will nourish your skin and balance over-dry and over-oily patches
  • to target specific skin concerns: such as blemishes and breakouts – healing and brightening products and toning techniques can be used to make your skin look clearer, firmer, fresher and lovelier!

Pretty much all facials will cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturise your skin. A good facial will leave your skin looking and feeling better, but should also leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed, and the experience should allow you some well-deserved downtime and give you a good pampering.

Different types of facial

  • prescription facial is tailored to your skin type and what you are hoping to gain from the facial. The facial should include a consultation before the treatment begins, so the therapist can have a look at your skin health, and choose the skincare products that meet your needs.
  • Deep-cleansing facials and balancing facials are most often recommended for combination, oily or spot-prone skin, as the aim will be to thoroughly clean the skin, unblock pores, remove impurities and balance over-oily patches.
  • nourishing or hydrating facial will be great for dry skin, but can also be recommended if your skin is temporarily dehydrated and needs hydration.
  • brightening facial is usually recommended for dull skin, or skin with uneven pigmentation. This type of facial will usually include a thorough exfoliation to buff away dead skin, and an application of a specialist serum or cream that aims to boost skin radiance and skin rejuvenation – while it evens out skin tone.
  • Anti-ageing facials aim to improve the look and feel of skin that has visible signs of ageing (age spots, fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage). Depending on the brand, these facials may include specialist equipment or massage techniques to help stimulate the facial muscles, to help lift and firm skin – restoring elasticity. They may also include a gentle peel or deep exfoliation followed by hydrating serums and creams, to help the skin look plumper and smoother. Some facials aim to provide a non-surgical facelift.
  • A facial for sensitive skin will include gentle, calming skincare products. If your skin is very reactive or you have rosacea, your therapist should be able to give you a patch test to check your skin doesn’t react to the skincare products. Facials for sensitive skin are unlikely to include abrasive exfoliators or harsh chemicals.

Classic Facial

The classic facial is the most basic type of facial. A classic facial includes steaming of the face, exfoliation, extractions, massaging, maybe some masks, and then the application of serums and moisturizers.

You can get a classic facial as an addition to your skincare routine. You can also get it whenever you feel like pampering yourself. A classic facial is good for maintaining healthy skin as well as targeting specific skin issues like acne reduction.

The benefits of classic facial are maintaining clean, decongested, and glowing skin. It deeply cleanses the face, unclogs pores, evens out the skin tone, and gives you a more radiant complexion.

The classic facial is suitable for all skin types. But people with dry skin and sensitivity should be cautious to avoid any possible irritation, especially during steaming. Then again, if your aesthetician is a professional, they’ll know how to handle different skin

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive type of facial treatment. Basically, there’s a device with a crystal or diamond tip. This device brushes off the upper layer of your skin while vacuuming anything that comes off. It works like sandpaper over the face. This treatment removes dead skin cells accumulated over the face. It promotes cell turnover, and collagen and elastin growth. The resurfaced skin looks healthier with less visible lines, pores, and scars. It’s perfect for anyone at any age who wants to get rid of fine lines, scars, and dullness.

Microdermabrasion can give clean, softer, plump, and glowing skin. You need to avoid sun exposure after the treatment. You can expect a certain amount of redness after the treatment. So, I wouldn’t book an appointment the day before my wedding.

LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy is a non-invasive facial treatment where they use different wavelengths of light to treat different skin issues. The different colours cause different reactions on the skin.  For example, blue light therapy fights inflammation. That’s why it’s perfect for getting rid of acne-causing bacteria and breakouts. On the other hand, red light and near-infra-red light helps your skin heal faster. It promotes collagen growth and skin rejuvenation. This light treats lines and wrinkles.
